All You Need to Know About Triumph Speed 400 & Scrambler 400 X

Bajaj Auto needs no introduction since it is one of the leading Indian motorcycle brands. Triumph on the other hand is an English motorcycle company that has been making awesome motorcycles since 1983. Triumph currently has 15 showrooms across India. And according to official reports, the entire Indian operation of Triumph will now be managed by Bajaj Auto. The joint venture between Bajaj and Triumph took place back in 2020.

What is the Goal of the Joint Venture Between Bajaj Auto and Triumph?

The primary goal of the joint venture between Triumph and Bajaj Auto was to ensure that Indians has access to affordable Triumph motorcycles. All Triumph motorcycles to date entailed steep MSRPs. After Bajaj took over Triumph’s operations in India, the former would help the latter to make affordable bikes. The first of the two motorcycles that will result from the joint venture between Triumph and Bajaj Auto are the Speed 400 and the Scrambler 400 X.

About Triumph Speed 400

The Triumph Speed 400 is the first affordable streetfighter bike from the joint venture between Bajaj and Triumph Motorcycles. The bike is currently made by Bajaj Auto in Maharashtra, India. The bike entails a single variant. The bike also comes with 3 colour options. They are as follows. 

  • Carnival Red with Phantom Black
  • Caspian Blue with Storm Grey and
  • Phantom Black with Storm Grey.

The current ex-showroom price of the Speed 400 is Rs. 2, 23,000. Attractive two-wheeler loan schemes are already being belted out by leading Indian lenders. 

The overall design language of the Speed 400 is in league with Triumph Speed Twin. It means that the Speed 400 comes with the following:

  • A round headlight
  • A semi-digital instrument cluster
  • A curvy fuel 13-litre capacity tank equipped with knee recesses
  • A step-up seat and
  • Side-slung exhaust unit.

The bike also sports a triangle badge, exhaust header clamps and a finned cylinder head!

The Speed 400 is powered by a brand new 398.15 cc, 4-valve, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine. The engine is mated to a six-speed gearbox and comes with a gear shift assist as well as a slipper clutch!

The peak power output of the engine is 39.5 bhp. And it is available when the engine is running at 8,000 rpm. The peak torque output of the engine is 37.5 Nm. And it is available when the engine is running at 6,500 rpm. The bike needs preventative servicing every 16,000 KMs. This outlines that the bike is quite durable as well.

The Speed 400 has been built using a hybrid perimeter frame that is made using reinforced steel tubes. The frame is bolted to the rear subframe of the bike. A rear swingarm is a twin-sided unit that is made using cast aluminium.

The bike comes with a 43 mm inverted front fork suspension with big pistons. The rear suspension is a preload-adjustable monoshock that is gas-charged.

The bike’s front brake is a 300 mm single disc with a single four-piston radial calliper. The rear brake of the bike is a 230 mm single disc with one dual-piston fixed calliper. The dry weight of the bike is 176 KGs.

About Triumph Scrambler 400 X

The Triumph Scrambler 400 X is yet to be launched in India. The rumour mill indicates that the bike is expected to hit the Indian showrooms by October 2023. The details about the bike are mentioned below:

The ex-showroom price for this motorcycle is estimated to be in the range of ₹ 2, 80,000 - ₹ 2, 90,000. Indian lenders are already drawing up plans for bike loan schemes for this bike. The Scrambler 400 X will be Triumph India's most affordable bike under its scrambler line-up.

The overall design of the Scrambler 400 X will entail neo-retro cues. The bike would be built on the same chassis as the Speed 400 and would also come with the same engine as the Speed 400. The gearbox would also be the same as the Speed 400. This means that the Scrambler 400 X would also come with a gear shift assist feature as well as a slipper clutch. 

However, the Scrambler would come with different motorcycle parts in a bid to suit its scrambler nature. For instance, the Scrambler would come with a headlight protector, hand guards as well as radiator and sump guards. The motorcycle would also come equipped with a handlebar brace as well as an elongated front mudguard.

The front suspension of the bike will be a 43 mm fork suspension with big pistons. The front suspension would also boast a 150 mm travel factor. The rear mono-shock would also boast preload adjustment feature. The bike would ride on a 19-inch front alloy wheel and a 17-inch rear alloy wheel. The wheels will be wrapped with off-road-ready tyres.

The Scrambler 400 X would come with a 320 mm single disc brake at the front. The rear brake would be a single 230 mm disc brake. The braking system would work in tandem with dual-channel ABS. The best part, the bike’s rear ABS sensor will be programmed to support being turned off or on as the bike is moving. 

Other features of the Scrambler 400 would consist of the following:

  • A semi-digital instrument cluster
  • A C-type charging port.

The Scrambler 400 X will be offered in Khaki Green, Carnival Red and Phantom Black colour options.
