What is ExhausTEC Technology & How Does It Work?

Over the years, Bajaj Auto has slowly but surely become the leading motorcycle brand in India. The brand has a large market share. On top of this, the brand also boasts the longest line-up of two-wheelers.

There are several factors that allowed Bajaj to reach the top. Some of them are mentioned below:

  • The brand makes durable bikes.

  • The prices of Bajaj bikes are reasonable.

  • The spare parts of Bajaj bikes are reasonably priced.

  • The bikes produced by Bajaj conform to the requirements of every Indian’s taste and preferences.

  • Bajaj bikes look amazing.

  • Bajaj periodically updates its bike range. The outcome is that even decades-old models remain at the top of sales charts.

  • The OEM has one of the largest dealership and service centre networks.

There is another reason that allows the brand to remain at the top. It is the brand’s ability to come up with new bike engine technologies.

What is ExhausTEC Technology?

The term "ExhausTec" refers to the Exhaust Torque Expansion Chamber, which is utilized in the exhaust system of an engine. It involves the mechanism of expelling the exhaust gases from the cylinder. This technology effectively aids in the complete elimination of exhaust gases from the engine cylinder. ExhausTec is a Bajaj patented technology that stands for Exhaust Torque Expansion Chamber. ExhausTec technology was introduced by Bajaj in India back in 2009. The first motorcycle that came with this technology was the Pulsar 150.

How Does Bajaj’s Patented ExhausTec Technology Work?

The ExhausTec technology works with the help of an exhaust torque expansion chamber. It is a device that Bajaj installs on most of its bikes. The device is installed in the exhaust manifold of a Bajaj bike.

The device can be explained as a form of a tuned box or resonator. The position of this device in the exhaust manifold of a Bajaj bike is in the header pipe. The experts at Bajaj explain that the goal of Bajaj ExhausTec technology is to enhance ‘scavenging. Cycle’.

The scavenging cycle is the stage of combustion where the exhaust gas is pushed out of the engine’s cylinder. This simple step allows Bajaj bike engines to extract most of the energy out of the fuel injected into the cylinder. Bike engines without this technology often have to burn fuel in the presence of exhaust fumes within the cylinder. This makes bike engines without ExhausTec technology less efficient.

Experts from Bajaj Auto also claim that Bajaj ExhausTec Technology also builds a vacuum in the exhaust manifold. This vacuum, in turn, enhances the efficiency of the exhaust valve, when the engine is in low RPMs. The outcome is that the engine sucks in more air from the atmosphere. This excess air enriches the air-fuel mixture in the engine’s combustion chamber.

The outcome of this entire process is that the engine makes more power and torque. On top of this, the excess power and torque are available to the rider from the low RPM ranges. Furthermore, despite the engine is making more power and torque, it will consume less fuel.

In-Depth Analysis

ExhausTec Technology makes the best use of the high-pressure gas that exits the cylinder of an engine. The high-pressure gas forms a wavefront. The high-pressure gas then makes its way into the exhaust pipe. The exhaust pipe is already occupied with remnants of exhaust fumes from previous combustion cycles. The latest batch of high-pressure gas exerts pressure on the lingering exhaust fumes in the exhaust pipe. This process continues till the wavefront reaches the end of the pipe.

The role of ExhausTec is to subject the exhaust gas coming out of the engine to a cross-sectional change. When the exhaust gas enters the expansion chamber, a significant portion of the strength that the exhaust gas holds will be sent in the opposite direction.

This oppositely flowing exhaust gas creates the abovementioned vacuum in the exhaust manifold of the bike. The vacuum compels the engine to suck in more air. The excess oxygen present in the charge that just entered the combustion chamber burns the injected fuel efficiently. One must also remember that the whole process is taking place when the engine speed (RPM) is low.

The outcome is more power, more torque, and more mileage. Currently, Bajaj Auto offers this technology in the engines of all the bikes in its Pulsar range.
