ABS vs. Non-ABS - Difference Between ABS & Non-ABS in Bike

Let's Get a Glimpse of the History of Brakes First

Brakes have been a part of the automobile system since the day it exists. You would not want to drive a car or bike which cannot be stopped and to make it stop we needed a mechanism known as brakes. The very first type of brake which we used was the wooden block brake which was used with metal-rimmed wheels the brake would rub against the metal rim causing friction between the wheel and the brake which eventually stopped the vehicle. As the development of brakes continued next in line was the mechanical drum brake which has this spring mechanism inside a drum which was placed in the center of the wheel and pistons will push the rubber brake shoes that would grip the wheel to slow it down.

This type of brake is still used in many vehicles coupled with a newer braking mechanism known as disk brake which has a disk along with a piston mechanism attached to the disk and when the lever is pulled this piston grips around the disk and stops the vehicle.

This development of brakes has come a long way straight from using the wooden block brakes in a cart to having cars as well as ABS bikes in India.

ABS, Let's See What it is?

At the beginning of 1970 automobile manufacturers started offering a new braking system which would automatically grip and release the brake pads in rapid successions by using computer-based operations which release the pumping action of the brake so that even under heavy braking the wheels do not lock and keeps rotating giving the driver a better steering control over the vehicle and avoid skidding of the vehicle. In present times ABS in bikes has also become a common practice among manufacturers. Reportedly the number of accidents due to skidding has come down by a large number since we have started using the ABS or anti-lock braking system.

Non-ABS Brakes

Non-ABS or the traditional braking system is quite simple as you just have to apply pressure on the brake pedal and the brake pads clasp against the wheel bringing it to a halt but in situations where sudden freezing of wheels can cause skidding we had to use different techniques to prevent skidding.

The techniques involve rapid pumping of the brake pedal. The driver has to keep pumping the brake and releasing it until the vehicle is stabilized and in control. This comes with a lot of practice and is not easy to attain even after mastering this technique you cannot say for sure that you can prevent skidding because in adverse cases you might not be able to control the vehicle and this might get fatal even leading to death in some cases.

Using ABS

ABS pumps the brakes in a lot of repetitions in a small fraction of time. Since this braking system uses computer-aided software to control the pumping, the driver has to apply pressure on the brake pedal continuously so that the ABS comes into action and brings back the vehicle in a controlled steering state in cases where it might skid.

As of now, ABS bikes in India have become a common thing and almost all automobile companies such as Bajaj, etc provide you with ABS options in their vehicle. So, now that you know the benefits of using ABS. Get your hand on your new bike loaded with ABS and all the new features available in easy EMI options and low Bike loan interest rates.
